GT5 Face Tracking

Last night, I discovered that Gran Turismo 5 uses the Eye Toy for face tracking! I had wondered why it had Eye Toy support, I assumed that it was there for future use such as recording your winning face, or capturing your driving face during a multiplayer event..

I’ve given it a go, it’s not that useful as you need to turn your head quite a bit while trying to also look at the TV!  If I sit about 2′ away from my 50″ TV, it kinda works well, but my eyes start to burn along with my face being so close to the plasma screen!

It only work with Arcade and Practise, in PREMIUM cars as they have the interior views..

I did a quick Google, and found this useful article too:

It just seems that information on this segment seems to be scattered all over the place. So Im going to just set up a 101 on head tracking. Known as “Face Tracking” in GT5.

You will be required to use a PS3 Eye Toy. Preferably the version that is used in conjuction with the Move. But any other PS3 Eye Toy should work. (I AM NOT SURE ABOUT PS2 EYE TOY. Getting that out of the way.)

A couple of notes:

Face Tracking ONLY currently works in ARCADE MODE and Practice Mode.

Face Tracking ONLY works in cars with INTERIOR Views as far as I can see. (I play in front bumper and did not notice it working. But in Front Bumper view, you dont need to really turn your head for everything is seen as clear as day anyway. Some videos shows people being able to work it, you may have to exagerate your sensitivities to really notice it.)

Set Up:

Start Gran Turismo 5 and go to your Settings from the main menu. Head down into Hardware and scroll to the far left until you see  “Playstation Eye”. Select it to get into the settings. (Please have your Eye Toy already connected so you can work on it.

Notes: You will see the preview box in grayscale, this is normal. Do not freak out from lack of color, its designed this way so the Eye Toy can clearly read your head/face movements. Try to avoid wearing glaring/shiny glasses, and try to avoid wearing masks/hats for more effeciency. Do not worry, people will not see your on cam anyway. (Tho I hope they implement in game “Car cams” while racing, that would be pretty fun. ^^) You will also see 4 lines indicating a “Square”, this is your your cameras MAIN FOCUS (Which we will call FOCUS BOX). And you will also note that once your face in IN the FOCUS BOX, a small crosshair will appear. This is the Eye Toy reading/tracking your face. This is how you will adjust your settings.

Position your Eye Toy directly in front of your, but not from the side. This is important to make this most effective. From the Side, it will be harder to track your face movements. You can however elevate your camera above/below. As long as the cam is looking directly at your from the center, it doesnt matter.

Make sure the cam is “Zoomed” in by roating the lengs. Do not touch the glass, just turn the “pipe”. Now, adjust the camera so that the Focus Box surrounds your had entirely. This will require you to adjust your cam closer or further. Do not worry tho, you can adjust the setting if you have no choice but to capture more than just your head.

As your move your face/head around, you’ll notice that the crosshair will NOT leave the focus box, this is why its very important for positioning. You’d want to maximize your tracking by having your head as close to the cam so your head fits just inside the focus box. The Eye will try to track your face as it turns.

Settings in Plain American English (Yay!):

Face Angle Range: Basically, it makes the “in game” first person view turn sharply based on how high the setting is as you turn your head.

When you look left or right, it will turn the camera left or right accordingly. I’d recomment leaving it as 2 or 3. The higher the setting, the more the in game cam turns as your look left or right. Keeping it low allows your not to draw your eyes from the road where it matters as your turn your head.

Face Positon Range:

Basically, as your adjust your head around, the cam kinda adjusts will you. As you look straight and move your head right, the cam will adjust in game to move right but not turn. So if you sit up straight, the cam will adjust over the wheel better allowing better vision thru the window, etc.

Keep it at 2 or 3. The higher, the more the cam will move based on how you move your head. Beware, too high can disorient you. Keeping it lows allows the cam to be more “Fixated” in the driver seat but can still adjust slightly.

Face Recignition Threshold:

Ok, this is the kicker. The lower the number, the more the eye will try to trace your head “Shape” to read your movements. Which can cause it to predict the actions incorrectly and turn the cam in the way you may not want it. But also, too high will make it harder for it to read your face because it will be calculating/processing too much for precise movement, causing a “lag”. I recommend a 5, around the middle. If you are well lit in the cam, you can bump it up a lil higher.  I have mines around 7 with the light on. I lower it when light is off.

Camera Exposure:

Just leave it in Auto but if you want to manually adjust it, try to make the picture as clear as possibly on Camera Preview. The clearer the picture, the easier for the Eye to read your movements.

Camera Sensitivity:

Again, Auto. I wouldnt even mess with this. Let the camera work, its fairly smart.

Face Recognition Size:

The Focus Box’s size. Leave it at 100. Any lower on the number, and it will shrink the box. Adjust accordingly. Remember, you want it to wrap around your head for best tracking.

After you’re done, hit OK. Exit the settings, Save your Settings (If Auto Save isnt on) from the Main Menu.

Next go to Arcade Mode, pick whatever mode you want and aim for cars with interrior view. Most Audis have it, if you want to just test it without looking for a car, just pick the Audi TT or R8.

Remember, you have be in the interrior. Press Select to switch views until you’re looking at your wheel. And start turning your head left and right. Adjust the settings accordingly until you are happy with what you got. And have fun.~

If Im missing anything, feel free to add in replies. Try to keep flaming out, this is to help others with confirming how this works. It is a how to setting. Im also going to post this in GameFAQs.
